The Building and Zoning Department maintains elevation certificates submitted for permitted structures within Columbia County. We have paper copies of the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) aka: FEMA Flood Maps or digital aerial printouts.
Contact the Columbia County Floodplain Coordinator at 386-719-1474.
Citizens Information Center (CIC)
During active emergency events or storm threats, the CIC is your direct line for real-time information regarding shelters, road closures, and localized safety updates.
(386) 719-7530
The CIC is activated during significant weather events to assist residents with non-emergency flood inquiries and pet-friendly shelter status.
Primary flooding results from water ponding during heavy storms and the Suwannee and Santa Fe rivers reaching flood stage.
Because the county is relatively flat, stormwater can overwhelm street drainage.
Resident Tip: Do not blow yard waste into the street. This prevents clogging of stormwater grates and culverts.
High water data available from SRWMD at (386) 362-1001.

TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN
- Evacuation: If necessary, do so immediately. Turn off all utility services.
- Walking/Driving: 6 inches of moving water can knock you down; 2 feet can sweep a car away.
- Electricity: Stay away from power lines. Report downed lines to (386) 758-1125.
Flood Insurance
Standard homeowner policies do not cover floods. Columbia County (Community #120070) offers NFIP coverage. Visit FloodSmart.gov.
Retrofitting & Permits
Development in the floodplain requires a permit. If repairs exceed 50% of the value, the building must be brought up to code.
Dry out your home immediately to prevent mold. Report drainage problems or illegal dumping to Public Works at (386) 758-1019.
